The Story of Budhia Singh

Budhia Singh is a remarkable boy who was born to run. His story is one of courage, resilience, and determination. Here is a brief overview of his life and achievements.

His Early Life and Struggles

Budhia Singh was born on 22 March 2002 in a poor family in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. His father died when he was very young, and his mother Sukanti had to work as a domestic helper to support him and his three sisters. When Budhia was four years old, his mother sold him to a street vendor for Rs. 800 (about $11) to pay off her debts.

Fortunately, Budhia was rescued by Biranchi Das, a judo coach and social worker who ran an orphanage for underprivileged children. Biranchi took Budhia under his wing and gave him a new home, food, education, and love. He also discovered Budhia's extraordinary talent for running when he made him run as a punishment for being naughty. Budhia ran for hours without stopping or getting tired.

His Rise to Fame and Controversy

Biranchi decided to train Budhia as a marathon runner and enrolled him in various competitions. Budhia soon became a sensation in the media and the public for his amazing feats of endurance. He ran more than 50 marathons before he turned six years old, including a 65 km (40 miles) run from Puri to Bhubaneswar in 2006 that earned him a place in the Limca Book of Records as the world's youngest marathon runner.

However, Budhia's fame also attracted controversy and criticism. Many people accused Biranchi of exploiting Budhia for money and fame, and putting his health and life at risk by making him run long distances at such a young age. The government intervened and banned Budhia from running any more marathons until he turned 11 years old. They also took custody of Budhia from Biranchi and sent him to a sports hostel for his protection and welfare.

Biranchi fought back against the government and the media, claiming that he was only doing what was best for Budhia and that he had no ulterior motives. He also said that Budhia loved running and that it was his natural gift and passion. He filed a case in the court to get back Budhia's custody, but he was tragically killed by a gangster in 2008 before the verdict was announced.

His Current Status and Future Plans

Budhia is now 21 years old and still living in the sports hostel in Bhubaneswar. He has not run any marathons since he was six years old, but he has continued his training and education under the guidance of the hostel authorities. He has also participated in some state-level competitions and won medals.

Budhia has not given up on his dream of becoming an Olympic champion someday. He hopes to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics and represent India in the marathon event. He also wants to reunite with his mother and sisters, who he has not seen for many years.

Budhia is grateful for all the support and encouragement he has received from his fans and well-wishers over the years. He is also thankful for Biranchi Das, who he considers as his father figure and inspiration. He says that Biranchi taught him how to run with his heart and soul, and how to never give up on his goals. b70169992d
